It was a pretty uneventful start and swim. Pretty simple course - out along the shore to the first turn buoy (along shoreline) made a 90 degree left hand turn, 50 yard swim to the second left hand 90 degree turn. Then we headed passed the swim start and around a small island. I kept a nice strong pace, good line, and had no sighting issues. I finished with a 1:13min/100m pace, so I was happy. I stood up with sand under my feet, quickly turning into wet cool grass, stripped my wetsuit, and hopped on the bike.
It only took about 2 minutes to find the first big climb of the 6.2 mile course as we made our way around the path of the lake. Then it was up and down for the rest of the race. Never could get into a groove and was never sure how hard each hill was going to be to get over. I was patient with each climb, staying strong and consistent, and tried to push the downhills. I passed quite a number of other athletes on the run course but could of made up more ground if I wouldn't have been so conservative on the course. I crossed the finish line feeling great (looking back at the race I wish I would of pushed the envelope a bit more) but it was a great experience to race with so many great racers. Also, racing at the 30th anniversary of the race was something special as well.
