I arrived at the race site in the pouring rain about 2 hours early, so I made the decision to sit the storm out. I didn't want to set my gear out in the rain unless I had to, I had time to spare so I waited it out. After a little while I got my gear set up, talked with some friends and mentally prepared for the race. The race started with ominous clouds hanging in the distance over the mountains like it was going to let loose at any minute. My wave went first , which always is a plus when I can get clean water. The start was an in the water wetsuit legal start with the Elites, relays, and males 30-34 all in the first wave. The gun went off and I took off. Made my way to the clean water and stayed steady. I noticed with wearing the wetsuit for the first time that I got very hot but didn't feel much different other than that. I had a real good swim and headed out of T1 in 3rd.
The bike course was unimpressive, no big climbs and not a pancake. I guess a bunch of false flats. The course was set up that I could see the leader at three different turn around points. I stayed on pace with the leader at the first two turnaround points and caught the second place athlete at that point. By the third turnaround point he started pulling away. I headed into T2 in second place and now I felt like my ribs were becoming a factor. Not so much a consistent pain as much as not feeling like I could take a deep breath. With every deep breath there was a deep pain.
I breezed through the transition and head to the run course which is a mix of trail running and paved paths through the woods. It was nice being shaded for a majority of the run. At this point the cloud cover had moved without letting another drop fall, and the sun popped out leaving it very humid. It was two loops and noticed I was losing ground on the leader. I stayed strong, ran my own race, tried to not focus on my ribs and finished second in my wave, placing 6th overall and 1st in my Age group.
NOTES: I thought I had a decent race did everything I could possibly do with how my body was holding up. I thought the bike went well considering that I only rode the Cd0.1 once the day before. The fit felt good just need to get used to the new gearing and feel of it.
